Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying's Remarks on Unfriendly US Comments Amid China's Fight Against Outbreak

2020-01-31

Q: While China is doing its best to fight the pneumonia outbreak caused by the novel coronavirus, certain US officials have made some unfriendly comments. Secretary of Commerce said the virus could help bring jobs back to the US. Others, in an veiled attack, accused China of reluctance to cooperate with the US. The Department of State issued a notice today, raising travel advisory on China to the highest grade of warning, which is currently placed on Iraq and Afghanistan. Secretary of State even continued his vicious attack on China's national system. I wonder what's China's response?

A: Currently the Chinese people are going all out to fight against the pneumonia outbreak caused by the novel coronavirus. Acting with openess, transparency and a high sense of responsibility, the Chinese government keeps the international community including the US well-informed with timely updates and shared relevant data. A friend in need is a friend indeed. Many countries have offered China support in various means. In sharp contrast, certain US officials' words and actions are neither factual nor appropriate. Just as the WHO recommended against travel restrictions, the US rushed to go in the opposite way. Certainly not a gesture of goodwill.

Adversity makes one stronger just as polishing makes jade finer. The Chinese nation is known for its perseverence and resilience. We have every confidence that with the resolute leadership of the CPC, the enormous strength of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the strong support from the international community, the Chinese people, fighting with one heart and mind, will definitely win the battle against the outbreak and overcome any difficulty lying ahead to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
